Job Description

UAA's Aviation Technology Division is seeking Flight Operations Desk Assistants (ODAs) to support the day-to-day operations of the Flight Operations department. There are 2 levels within this labor pool: ODA Level I and ODA Level II, each with distinct responsibilities and minimum experience requirements as noted.

These Student Assistant positions are required to work flexible hours, which will be based around your class schedule. Hours may include mornings, evenings, nights, and weekends, depending on department needs and your availability. Exact hours to be coordinated between the employee and supervisor.

To thrive in this role, the successful candidate will meet the following criteria:

ODA Level I and Level II:

  • Knowledge of professional-level office methods and practices
  • Customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing - to include performing proofing and editing tasks when situations dictate
  • Basic knowledge of computer operations and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access; web-based databases; Google Applications; and email programs
  • Knowledge of cash handling and deposit preparation processes
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Multi-tasking and prioritization skills and abilities
  • Knowledge of filing systems and processes

ODA Level I:

  • Familiarity with aviation-scheduling or aviation-accounting software programs preferred
  • Introductory level understanding of weather, flight tracking, and aviation information applications
  • Basic ability to operate a two-way radio
  • Basic level understanding of FAA regulations associated with a flight training organization

ODA Level II:

  • Familiarity with aviation-scheduling or aviation-accounting software programs required
  • Beginning/Intermediate level understanding of weather, flight tracking, and aviation information applications
  • Proficient skill level using web-based databases, Google Applications, Banner, and Blackboard
  • Demonstrated experience operating aviation-related two-way radio systems
  • Beginning/Intermediate level understanding of FAA regulations associated with a flight training organization
  • Ability to provide direction/instruction to others in a lead capacity
  • Evidence of ability to independently draft business correspondence such as letters, memos, instructions/check lists, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIRED

To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment;
or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters;
and
c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs or their designee.

ODA Level I and II:
  • Familiarity with office machines (copiers, printers, credit card machine, and computers)
  • Customer service background working with diverse populations

ODA Level I:

  • 6 months clerical experience
  • Documented cash handling experience to include issuing receipts
  • High School diploma or the equivalent and 1 semester of college experience

ODA Level II:

  • 12 months clerical experience within an Aviation environment
  • 6 months experience performing in a lead capacity among peer employees
  • Documented cash handling experience to include issuing receipts
  • High School diploma or the equivalent, minimum of 1 academic year of successful college coursework, and actively pursuing an aviation-related degree

PREFERRED

ODA Level I:
Introductory (3-6 months) office/administrative experience.

ODA Level II:
Beginning (6-12 months) office/administrative experience with a background in the aviation education or industry.

Position Details:

This Student Assistant 2 position is located on the Aviation Technology Complex at Merrill Field Airport in Anchorage, AK. Pay is $15.26/hour.
