Campaign Organizer

Based in Michigan
(largely remote, requires travel across the state)

AFT Michigan is seeking an energized and committed Campaign Organizer to support the first contract campaign for MSU Extension workers represented by the Union of Non-Tenure Track Faculty (UNTF), AFT 1855. This is a temporary position with the goal of transitioning into a permanent position with UNTF 1855 upon conclusion of the contract campaign. Work will be largely remote but require travel across the state to meet with members based in regional offices. The Organizer will work with our leaders and staff team to:

• Build relationships with members and potential members via 1-on-1 conversations;
• Develop and empower local leaders and activists to handle union responsibilities;
• Enter and maintain accurate data in campaign database;
• Encourage member participation in union programs;
• Build a stronger UNTF, AFT Michigan, and labor movement; and
• Accomplish other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Independent project management skills
• Leadership development and training ability
• Ability to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds
• Ability to listen actively and frame issues
• Knowledge of organizing strategies, collective bargaining, and contract enforcement
• Experience in unions or other social justice organizations
• Knowledge of higher education and labor issues
• Ability to write and speak effectively
• General computer literacy and proficiency in basic data management
• Willingness to incorporate constructive feedback from supervisors and colleagues
• Willingness to work evenings and weekends and participate in union-wide activities

$60,000 yearly salary and excellent employer-paid benefits.
