Description

The National WWII Museum is currently seeking an Institutional Archivist. The Institutional Archivist works with the Museum’s Collections and Exhibits Department and reports to the Senior Registrar & Director of Collections. The Institutional Archivist is responsible for the management, processing, care and documentation of the Museum’s institutional archives including managing retention schedules, writing and establishing policies and procedures, managing the physical and intellectual organization of holdings, and the proper storage and retrieval of holdings.

Requirements

  • Develop and update policies and procedures for the Museum Institutional Records and Archives (MIRA).
  • Develop and update retention schedules for The National WWII Museum’s records.
  • Implement standards for institutional archival holdings.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and consistent archival processing procedures for Museum Institutional Records and Archives (MIRA).
  • Works closely with the Senior Registrar & Director of Collections to establish and maintain intellectual and physical control of the Museum’s collections in accordance with best practices and accreditation standards.
  • Manage the institutional archival collections including papers, photographs, oversized material, old media, digital records and objects.
  • Ensure proper housing (and re-housing when necessary) for archival collections in accordance with archival best practices.
  • Utilize the archival information management system, ArchivesSpace, to manage and retrieve collection information.
  • Manage storage areas for safety, organization, cleanliness and accessibility.
  • Manage physical access and storage of archival materials, including inventory, re-housing, and physical re-organization.
  • Conduct oral history interviews with volunteers and former staff of The National WWII Museum for the MIRA.
  • Supervise contractors and volunteers in support of the MIRA and the Collections & Exhibits Department objectives.
  • Provide access to the collections by responding to requests from the staff, the public, and other institutions.
  • Assist with educational programming by filling requests for research material.
  • Provide reports for senior management in support of the Board of Trustees, and Board Committees including development of reports, updates, presentations, etc.
  • Participate in assigned work teams, work groups, staff committees, projects, assignments, tasks, etc. as directed by the Senior Registrar & Director of Collections or the Associate Vice President of Collections & Exhibits.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Archival Studies, Museum Studies or similar required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of archival management experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival procedures, collections records management with ability to work with computerized collections management systems and object handling.
  • Knowledge of preventative conservation techniques and best practice standards.
  • Knowledge and experience with an archival information or collection management system.
  • Strong written communication skills as well as strong organizational skills.
  • General knowledge of World War II era history and material culture preferred.
  • Willingness to work beyond the normal workday during special events or heavy visitation periods to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to lift, carry and place artifacts on shelves, including overhead, up to 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability to climb ladders up to 12 feet
  • Valid driver’s license preferred.
