Job Description

SUMMARY

The Staff Attorney reviews legal documents, provides legal advice to title company management, examines titles to real property for the purpose of producing title insurance and other various title products, and works with outside counsel when authorized to do so. Upon request, manages litigation and performs administrative and other tasks related to those functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • With advice from the General Counsel and outside law firms, reviews and negotiate contracts and other legal documents to ensure that contract and other documents meet business objectives and appropriately address legal issues.
  • Provides legal advice on underwriting issues such as powers of attorney, trust documents, corporate documents, and other various issues as it relates to insuring title to real property.
  • Examines real property title documents for the purpose of producing title insurance and other various title report products
  • Outsource legal questions and contracts to outside counsel when it house resources are insufficient.
  • Assemble facts and communicate with other associates to gather information and advice from the General Counsel.
  • Handle miscellaneous legal matters as assigned by the General Counsel.
  • May be responsible for managing litigation involving the title company by working with bank associates and outside law firms.
  • All other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • No supervisory responsibilities
  • Juris Doctorate degree required. Must have successfully passed State Bar Examination.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

Must possess a high level of analytical ability. Strong organizational and time management skills required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required for major contracts with Company officers, customers, compliance personnel and other legal counsel.
