Job Description

Position Number: 820607

The Institute for Ethics and Integrity in Journalism and Media (IEIJM) at Duquesne University is excited to welcome applications from distinguished scholars to be its Visiting Media Scholar for spring semester 2025.

Founded more than 130 years ago by the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, Duquesne University places a premium on excellence in scholarship and the ethical pursuit of truth through communication, whether in traditional journalism, broadcast news, sports, advertising, public relations or media design. Since Guttenberg?s invention of the printing press, technological innovations have presented media practitioners with ethical dilemmas in gathering, reporting and presenting information. Human missteps or lapses in ethical decision-making?as well as external forces and seismic shifts in the media landscape?have contributed to a deteriorating trust in media in more recent years.

Since 2021, IEIJM has focused on ways to restore that public trust in media through thoughtful discussions among students and members of the public by sponsoring national guest speakers who elevate discussions about ethics, supporting research examining public trust in media, and creating opportunities for press organizations, universities and media outlets to collaborate in ways that expand local news coverage where it is lacking.

The Visiting Media Scholar will be appointed for a minimum of sixteen weeks of the semester (Spring 2025), with a stipend of $15,000 depending on experience, with some relocation expenses, and availability to participate in Institute-sponsored events. Although an in-person residency is preferred, remote teaching is also a possibility and funding is available to assist with travel and lodging at least three times during the semester for in-person lectures. The scholar will be provided with on-campus office space, an e-mail account, and all Gumberg Library privileges.

Responsibilities include teaching one, 3-credit undergraduate/graduate seminar on a topic of scholar?s choosing among our department majors, offering one public lecture, and holding weekly office hours for consultation by students and faculty. Priority will be given to applicants with backgrounds in generative AI in the newsroom; sports journalism/sports information; public relations; and digital media design.

The Visiting Media Scholar will have access to the educational and research opportunities and resources at Duquesne University, as well as the University community, which will benefit from the scholar?s research and insights. For additional information about the Institute, consult its website at . For a list of majors in the Media Department, please consult the departmental website at
