Job Description

Position Summary: The Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for establishing partnerships with corporations, churches, community organizations, and individuals to secure in-kind donations, supplies, and group activities to assist in the operations of programs and grounds and buildings of Santa Maria Hostel (SMH). The coordinator will participate in various public events in the community to promote the awareness of SMH. The coordinator oversees the volunteer program, including working with programs to identify volunteer opportunities, creating and managing volunteer projects for groups from various organizations, and cultivating and sustaining positive relationships in the community for purposes of resource development Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Maintains close communication with key program staff to learn about projects and resources needed.
  • Identifies and fosters positive and collaborative relationships with community organizations and SMH staff.
  • Attracts new corporate, community, and faith-based volunteers to SMH and maintains relationships to strengthen involvement.
  • Serves as initial point of contact for interns, volunteers, and volunteer groups. Explains engagement opportunities, provides initial volunteer orientation, ensures successful planning and execution of volunteer activities.
  • Manages and supervises one-time volunteer events such as Days of Caring in coordination with CDCO and Operations Director.
  • Attend corporate employee and community events to promote awareness about program services. Coordinate with Program team for awareness and support when needed.
  • Coordinates a comprehensive volunteer program that provides for the screening, selection, orientation and training and evaluation of volunteers.
  • Serves as a liaison to Santa Maria Hostel’s service affiliates; cultivate these groups for volunteer projects and donations.
  • Coordinates volunteer orientation sessions, as well as specialized orientations on an as-needed basis.
  • Works closely with program directors to identify and communicate their volunteer needs, as well as their requirements. Assign volunteers to meet program needs as appropriate to volunteers’ interests and skills.
  • Works with programs to assign or create volunteer projects for interested groups from corporations, community/civic groups, schools, congregations, etc.
  • Coordinates volunteer projects with constant volunteer groups (such as AA and others) and individual volunteers.
  • Coordinates completion of all required paperwork for volunteers (background checks, blue basin etc.).
  • Fosters relations with existing constant volunteers.
  • Maintains close communication with key program staff to learn about volunteer needs.
  • Including all staff required for the coordination of activities.
  • Tracks all volunteer activities and data to include but not limited to names, contact information, projects completed, number of hours and monetary value if applicable.
  • Attends meetings, seminars and training courses as required
Education/Experience: Associate or bachelor’s degree; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent experience (6+ years). Annual completion of following Blue Basin training: Understanding of Motivational Enhancement Therapy; trauma, abuse and neglect, violence, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and related conditions or other approved, equivalent training. Certificates and Licenses: Current CPR certification, first aid and completion of approved crisis intervention training such as Prevention and Intervention of Aggressive Behaviors (PIAB) or Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behaviors (PMAB), during new hire orientation.
