Job Description

Doctoral Psychology Intern

Primary Purpose:
The Doctoral Psychology Intern provides intake appointments, crisis intervention, individual, couple, and group counseling, psychological assessments to students, consultation to faculty and staff, outreach services to the university community, and participates in emergency consultation rotation. Interns receive individual and group supervision hours for degree completion. Work is supervised by professional staff and individual clinical work is supervised by a licensed psychologist.

This position is full-time for twelve (12) months beginning August 1 and ending July 31.

Essential Functions:
  • Conducts intake interviews with students who request counseling services and complete requisite paperwork within the same day.
  • Provides individual, couples, and group counseling to students on a scheduled basis or through crisis intervention.
  • Completes required psychological assessment batteries.
  • Provides outreach workshops and lectures.
  • Maintains up-to-date files on clients.
  • Consults with supervisors and staff as needed.
  • Acts as campus resource on psychology and represents counseling services in the university community.
  • Acts as a liaison/advocate between client and campus or community resources as needed.
  • Attends training seminars, staff meetings, and supervision on a weekly basis and in a prompt manner.
  • Represents the department and division at public relations events as requested.
  • Interacts with staff and students in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Commits to a full-time, 40 hour per week internship.
  • Participates in supervision and training with an openness to learning and receiving feedback.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be a current doctoral-level student in a counseling or clinical psychology Ed.D., Ph.D., or Psy.D. program.
  • Must be approved by the academic program as ready for internship.
  • Must have completed comprehensive exams, or their equivalent prior to application.
  • All coursework toward the doctoral degree must be completed before the start of internship.
  • Candidate must have completed a minimum of two hundred eighty (280) face-to-face clinical hours.

  • Ability to effectively weigh and evaluate personal needs, client needs, and the policies of the agency and to respond and negotiate these competing needs as appropriate.
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive in psychological emergencies and/or crises when provided with appropriate supervision and direction.
  • An enhanced level of self-awareness as to how he or she relates to others and an ability to effectively modulate this personal style as conditions warrant.
  • Ability to communicate via computer e-mail.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment. Work performed during standard business hours.

Hiring Range: $24.00 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
